S & T - BBC - February 2015
On Monday 16th February 50 members of our group had a coach outing to the BBC in London. It was a nice start to the day and the journey into London went well. As the BBC tour was after lunch there were a couple of free hours to look round the shops near Oxford Street and get a suitable lunch. We were split into two groups for the tour. Firstly we were shown the main news room - the one you normally see on the main BBC News. Round the operational area are both control rooms and small studios where the news and weather are presented live. Then we moved to an adjacent area where several members were able to try presenting both the news and weather. Next came a visit to the One Show studio. I think we were all a bit surprised as to how small and ordinary it looked. Our guide explained how easy it is to use bright lighting and wide angle cameras to make it look much bigger and exciting. So far we had been in the new BBC building - now we moved on to the original building which was built in 1932. We were given a brief history in the foyer where so many famous people would have entered in days gone by. This building is mainly used for sound programmes though there is a beautiful small studio used for both sound and video recording. Finally several members were able to record a short play - complete with realistic sound effects. A very successful day which was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Colin for organising it all.
